Grinding

Today Scott Purdy from bernhard grinders came to Malton and Norton for the morning to do some training on two grinding machines we have on demo for a few weeks. We already have a grinder on site which we have had for sometime. The idea of the grinder demos is to compare a modern grinder, which grinds slightly different to our current set up. The current way we grind is to strip down machines. Relief grind each blade on the cylinders and relief grind the bottom blade. This is very time consuming but the only option we have. Due to the time consuming nature of the operation we tend to grind units once a year during winter. The new machines are all about speed, grinding in situ and spin grinding to maintain a non contact cut. Spin grinding is faster due to the minimal relief put on the blades. The downside is that they need to be ground more often. But the grind time can be reduced to hours not days. Which ever way of grinding the most important thing is maintaining the quality of cut.
Due to the nature of the processes there are seperate machines for cylinders and bottom blades.
The course remains wet but today we had 11 holes open, however with 7 winter cups. Rainfall was around 160mm for December. A third of the amount for the rest of the year. The forecast is for more rain so it doesn't look like we are going to dry out anytime soon.
Trees are being transplanted from out of unmanaged woodland to around the 20th tee area.
