6th green drain day 1

This morning Adam, Rob and Alistair started work on the 6th green drainage, there was a low spot on the bottom tier of the green that was holding water regularly. We decided against lifting the surround and edge of the green to reshape it as this would have been very disruptive to the green and time consuming. We decided to install a short section of drainage leading off the green to a soak away which would drain away naturally into the underlying lime stone. The lads hand dug the drain as we do not have the machinery to remove the soil in any other way. The trench is about 16m in length and 550mm deep, the depth is crucial to ensuring the drain works correctly.

Although there is free draining stone beneath the soil the water can not penetrate through fast enough to remove the amount of water we have had this year.
